Understanding NAPLAN: A Simple Guide for Parents
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is Australia's national assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It measures the essential literacy and numeracy skills students develop through the Australian Curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass-or-fail exam. Instead, it provides parents and teachers with a snapshot of a child's learning progress and identifies areas where extra support may be needed.
What does NAPLAN assess?
Students complete tests in four areas:
-
Reading
-
Writing
-
Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
-
Numeracy (mathematics)
What is tested at each year level?
-
Year 3: Basic reading, simple writing, spelling, grammar and fundamental maths skills.
-
Year 5: More advanced reading comprehension, persuasive writing, grammar and problem-solving in mathematics.
-
Year 7: Secondary school literacy, analysing texts, structured writing and higher-level mathematical reasoning.
-
Year 9: Critical reading, extended writing and complex mathematical problem-solving, preparing students for senior secondary education.
How are results reported?
Since 2023, results are reported in four proficiency levels:
-
Exceeding
-
Strong
-
Developing
-
Needs Additional Support
These levels help parents understand whether their child is meeting national expectations for their year level. NAPLAN is only one part of your child's overall school assessment and should be considered alongside school reports and teacher feedback.
